Perpetual dieting. Yo-yo weight loss and gain…it was a never-ending cycle…
Until I changed my perspective.
It’s funny how we’ll be quick to follow a generic diet plan that is “sweeping the nation” rather than taking time to understand our body in the same way we get to know our spouse or life partner.
As a child and teen, I was a massive overeater. I gorged on food that would essentially put me in carb coma in order to pass out and not have to deal with reality. Food was my “friend” and “ally” on the surface but in reality it was really my biggest enemy. It had full control over me.
Jenny Craig in 4th grade, low-carb, no dairy, no bread, no fat, and even the cabbage soup diet. You name it, I tried it. The issue of my need to “feed” never resolved itself.
When I was diagnosed by a third doctor to be on Prozac I realized something had to change. Not until I became a trainer and began eating like a bodybuilder did I fully understand the utter importance of experimentation with food.
Being a lover of food, I quickly discovered that eating 4-5 or even 6-8 small meals per day was AMAZING for someone like me who LOVED food. Instead of eating mass amounts of crap food in one sitting, I found I could eat clean food almost all day, every day and lose serious body fat!
In fact, when I had lost the majority of my weight (80 pounds) I got down to 134lbs in a size 10. Oh but when I learned how to dial-in my weight training and eating, I lost only 5 lbs. but dropped down to a size 3. It was the first time I’d EVER been in that size!!
The wisdom I gained in using myself as a guinea pig was priceless because taking notes of my experiences, my body’s responses, and the supportive research to add or subtract along the way helped me to really understand how my body works. In my practice, I encourage ALL of my clients to experiment with specific foods as well.
Most people will just read a book or an article and expect it to be the absolute truth, wondering why their body is suffering from flu-like symptoms to blood sugar crashes and everything in-between. There is NO one right answer for every body. We are all biochemically individual!
This post serves as a marker for yet another experiment I’m conducting right now.
Over the last four days, I’ve been going back to vegan and mostly raw eating based on some spiritual guidance I had received from my guides. The message had been creeping up on me for the better part of a month or so. Of course, my limiting beliefs about muscle being made by protein-dense diets tried to take over.
Thankfully, Spirit never lets me back down from what it wants me to be doing!
If you’ve ever been guided by that voice from within, you know how subtle it can be in the onset and the growing intensity as you try to ignore it. LOL As my life now is led BY Spirit, I know not to ignore it.
In the past, my decision to go vegan or raw was based on weight loss and aesthetics or detox. But this time, ohhhhh Spirit had a totally different purpose for it! Alignment.
I got the message that I needed to align with Solar energy. It showed me that there was a consonance with the Sun that needed to happen and in order for me to align with that I needed to become the physically vibrational equivalent of it through food. Yesterday afternoon, I found this (How WAVE X Will Affect You) and realized WHY I was getting the message to align NOW.
Had I not previously experimented with this way of eating, I would have no clue about how my body would respond, nor would I understand meal timing and food combining for my body’s highest good. And of course, I’m still learning along the way.
Each day, I start with 1 whole mango, 1 banana and a small handful of raspberries or blueberries, topped with a tiny sprinkling of hemp seeds. Pre-workout is either 5 oranges, or 2 oranges + 1 grapefruit, peeled and blended in my VitaMix and 2-4 bananas on the side. Afternoon snack is 1 avocado with pink salt.
Variables came with dinner and added drinks. As this time I’m not so focused on the fears I had about losing my muscle or even about eating too much fruit that would make me fat, I chose to play around with different veggies and fruits…and dare I say it, BREAD! For four days, I ate about 4 large slices of tossed sourdough bread with olive oil and pink salt. One day, I added sautéed greens with garlic, onions and red peppers to that.
Yesterday, I guilted myself into eating a baked yam during the day. Why? Well, I cooked them and I didn’t want them to go to waste. My body was not very happy with me to say the least. Guilt doesn’t feel good, especially when you are consuming it. Plus, my body really didn’t want the cooked food during the day!
Mental note, check.
Based on past experience, I know that my body does not like the citrusy fruits first thing in the am. I’m a Pitta-Kapha (see Chopra Center Dosha Quiz to find out what Dosha you are) so my body responds to these types of food by producing more mucous during the hours of 6am-10am. I also know that I do not do well with wet carbs at dinner time. These include things like yams. And, I know that my body prefers to have coffee, black, after lunch rather than in the am when it will simply send me into an acidic tail spin for the remainder of the day. Also, I have found that I am good eating solely raw fruits for first 2/3 of day and consuming cooked foods for dinner as raw foods at night keep me awake.
From this round, in just a few days, I’ve learned that I cannot eat a lot of seeds, nuts and fats until later in the day when I’m not consuming fruit. Whereas before, I used to douse my fruits with seeds and nuts to “get my protein in.” It led to feeling sluggish and the arousal of migraines. Now, no headaches and lots of energy.
No book will ever tell me these things!
I don’t know where this road will lead me, and I’m not attached to eating this way forever, but I do know that for now I’m being led by my body, and by Spirit, and that makes it flow with ease and grace.
